Notes for William (Spouse 1)
From John Herbert
William Coupe was a founder member of Eastbourne Chess Club in 1880. During the following 20 years he often captained the first team and played on top board. The mid 1890s were a successful time for the club. In 1893 when this photo [see media] was taken Eastbourne won the Sussex club competition, the McArthur Cup. The photo was taken by Ellis Kelsey, a professional photographer, who fortunately named all the players. Coupe is sitting 3rd up on the left, with fingers over the board. Kelsey is sitting 2nd up on the right.

Coupe owned a glass and china shop in Eastbourne town centre. In Nov 1899 he advertised a closing down sale before he retired to Lancashire.
