Notes for Robert Count Of Mortain
Norman nobleman and uterine half-brother of William the Conqueror.
Count of Mortain from about 1049.
While not one of the few proven Companions of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, he was one of the 5 additional names agreed upon by David C. Douglas and Geoffrey H. White. He is shown of the Bayeux Tapestry with his brother Bishop Odo and half-brother William the Conqueror.
His contribution to the success of the invasion was clearly regarded as significant as William awarded him 797 manors, many in Cornwall. He is considered by some to be the Duke of Cornwall. His greatest holding was the rape (subdivision) of Pevensey in East Sussex.
