Notes for Isabella Of Angouleme Queen of England
Second wife of King john.
Countess of Angouleme in her own right from 1202.
Queen consort of England from 1200 to 1216
Countess of La Marche from 1220
Originally betrothed to Hugh IX of Lusignan
Married at the age of 12 to John
Married Hugh X of Lusignan, the son of Hugh IX, in 1220. She did so without the permission of the king’s council in England.
Known as a blonde blue eyed beauty whose temper matched King John’s.
After her husband King John died and the coronation of her nine year old son Henry III, she returned to Angouleme to take control of her inheritance.
She had 14 children. 5 of John’s and 9 of Hugh’s.
Was a bitter enemy of Blanche Dowager Queen of France who
1) was involved in trying to make her husband King Louis VIII of France also King of England instead of Isabella’s husband John and later their young son King Henry III of England
2) snubbed Isabella after her return to France.
There is said to be an unconfirmed plot in 1244 by Isabella to poison Blanche. After the failure of this plot Isabella fled and sought refuge in Fontevraud Abbey

Notes for John (Lackland) (Spouse 1)
Reigned 1199-1216. His reign saw renewal of war with Phillip II Augustus of France to whom he has lost several continental possessions including Normandy by 1205. He came into conflict with his Barons and was forced to Sign the Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymede. His later repudiation of the charter led to the first barons war 1215-17 during which John died. Burke says he was born in 1160. King of Ireland 1177, Count of Mortain 1189, Earl of Gloucester.
